She must tell the truth on the Statutory Declaration, as lying on one is a very serious matter, akin to perjury.
Not purjury, but it is clearly a criminal offense to interfere with the recovery of goods in this matter punishable by a fine and imprisonment up to 50+ weeks.Bedsit_Bob wrote: »Forget the bit on the TVL website.
The people she is dealing with now, are not TVL's DCA, but rather court bailiffs, acting for the Magistrate Court that convicted her.
BTW. Has she moved home, since her doorstep encounter with TVL?
I'm not so convinced this is a fine for TV license evasion to be honest. It's an awful lot of money as Dennis quite rightly pointed out. Far more than one would normally expect a fine for this sort of thing to be.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

Hence why I said "akin to perjury".I'm not so convinced this is a fine for TV licence evasion to be honest. It's an awful lot of money as Dennis quite rightly pointed out. Far more than one would normally expect a fine for this sort of thing to be.
It may have been inflated (legally or not) with charges, but I'm pretty sure, from what has been said, that the matter does concern a fine for an evasion case.0 -
She's sure it's for a TV licence.
She has managed to borrow some money from family and will use that to pay them back, and she has agreed a monthly payment of £200 for the rest so at least she has got it sorted now. I would personally love to see the break down of charges though, as I also agree that it is a very high amount for a TV licence.
Bedsit Bob : She has indeed moved home, but it was over a year ago now.
I'll keep you all updated if she does supply me with a breakdown of charges.
Again thank you all for the advise, it has really helped. 0 -

Which probably explains why she didn't receive any paperwork, given the statement from your OP.The debt is over an unpaid T.V. licence a few years ago
I'm going to hazard a guess that she actually moved, in the few months after the doorstep encounter, meaning she no longer lived there, when the summons arrived.
If the then occupiers (if indeed there were any) didn't return the summons as "NOT AT THIS ADDRESS", the court would assume she hadn't bothered to enter a plea or attend, and find her guilty in absentia.0 -
It is difficult if posting a query on behalf of a friend as it is not always possible to get accurate information.
In this particular case however it is very important indeed to ask your friend to make urgent enquiries as the amount of the fine and the total amount being demanded do not seem correct at all.
A TV Licence fine is generally around £250 and the maximum amount that bailiff fees should be at the time of a personal visit is £310.0
