Debt not being chased affecting credit score

I have been looking to get a mortgage with the girlfriend to buy a new house as we have found out we are expecting and to no surprise of my mine, we were rejected with me failing the credit check. I was sort of expecting this as I was aware of an overdraft that I had with Lloyds TSB I never managed to pay back.
At the time I was a student and was struggling to keep up with the demands of being a student, however I attempt to start paying the debt back in 2009, but when I phoned the bank up they had no record of my debt at all. I thought this was too good to be true. So I left it a few weeks and my guilty conscious got the better of me so I attempt to phone back and try again. And again they had no record of my debt and suggested that it was due to their debt collection department changing hands to another department and they would contact me when they find my information. This is the last correspondence I have had with them since, and noticed I had an outstanding debt with them on my credit report with Noddle. The report also states that I am constantly defaulting each month due to this debt.
Any idea's and tips to how to go about this debt as I don't have a lot of disposable income and won't have any due to the girlfriends pregnancy. And how to get them to remove the previous defaults as it was their fault that I couldn't pay it off years ago.
I was really stupid and have not kept any of the previous debt letters, or a note of the dates I called them.
Thank you in advance

The reason they have no record of the debt is because they have sold it on to a debt recovery outfit. I'm sure you'll be hearing from them soon.geordiecrawf wrote: »The report also states that I am constantly defaulting each month due to this debt.

You cant. It was your fault you didnt pay it off when it was demanded. The default will remain as long as the debt does and then, even if you do pay it, up to a maximum of 6 years from the date of last default. It is therefore in your interests to settle it by whatever means necessary. Until then, you will be unable to get much in the way of credit and a mortgage is unlikely so long as the defaults remain on your file.geordiecrawf wrote: »I was really stupid and have not kept any of the previous debt letters, or a note of the dates I called them.
Yes. Do not ignore such demands and letters in future. As you have discovered, you will now have a blighted record for the next 6 years.
They may be able to tell you who they sold it on to but I dont know for sure. The only way to find out is to write to them and ask.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it
