Do you approve of the clocks going back?

The clocks have gone back an hour – we've left British Summer Time behind and are now back on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) until the spring, when the clocks will jump forward again.

This means relatively more light in the morning but less light in the evening during the winter months.

What time do you think our clocks should run on?

Not at all surprised at the votes so far; it's always been obvious to me that most people want lighter evenings all year round.

Unfortunately it appears that some farmers in remote areas get to decide otherwise! :(

    What yorkie said.

I hate the clocks going back, I find the early dark evenings incredibly depressing:(

Couldn't care less if it's dark in the morning, I have to go to work!!! (outside, I might add!)
I would rather it was light in the evening and be able to make the most of it when I can.

As an aside, isn't it a fact that there are more accidents on the road (including school children being knocked down whilst walking home from school) once the clocks go back.

That in itself is reason enough not to put the clocks back, im(humble)o.

Nice to see you posting :)
  • I'm amazed by the results so far. Many years ago, Mrs. Thatcher decided we should stay on Summer Time all year round. As a clock change hater, I was delighted. I think the experiment went on for 2 years before a very loud, unceasing chorus of screams and howls from the public (and not just those in the far North) forced it to be abandoned.
Despite the Lady being famously, "Not for turning", I think this is the only thing she ever backed down on (oops, forgot Poll Tax!)
  • Greenwich mean time (GMT) is based on this planet's relationship to the solar system. Our human biological circadian rhythms evolved over the millennia to be in sync with this revolving planet. Modern man who has been around for less than the blink of an eye, seems to think he can tinker with the laws of physics and biology any time he likes for his benefit, but there are always unforeseen consequences to our meddling. Our modern lives are increasingly artificial, but at least for six months of the year we are in sync with our solar system. Let's make it 12 months and keep GMT!

The option I would prefer is no offered. This is to stay on BST this winter then advance another hour next March. In other words go onto Continental European time. For most of the year most of the population are still asleep after it gets light and are still up with electric lights on after it gets dark. This is a simple cost free way of reducing CO2 emissions and saving everyone money. If there are any sectors who prefer a later start they can just start later, eg Scottish schools could start at 10.00 if they preferred.

That was in the 60s, well before Mrs T.

I remember little ones going to school in the dark at 8.45. This is in North Wales.

It's not dark at 3 or 3.30 on GMT, so put the clocks back.

Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)
  • According to my calculation the clocks go back for only 5 months? - no idea why - we could at least make it 4, so we would get lighter evenings in Feb
  • I think the poll should be more realistic - the EU Summer Time Directive has required all member states go forward at the end of March and back at the end of October since 2002. The real choice we have is what time zone we are in - the current one or join Central European Time an hour ahead (or join Greenland an hour behind??). Staying on GMT or on BST all year round or switching the other way aren't choices that are currently available to the UK government (as an EU country, which we surely must stay as one).
