Look for some advice please.

I got my p45 from my previous employer today and the amount of tax paid is around £800 less than the amount of tax paid on my last wage slip. Why would this be? and does it mean I have paid more tax than I should of or less?

I am confused!!! (doesn't take much!) - the tax codes on each is the same

Thanks

    Yes no problem

Wage slip figures (period 6 to end Sept)

Taxable pay to date = 2508.11
Tax paid to date = 4752.70

P45 figures (period 7 to end oct - as got small amount of on call pay still to get this month)

Total pay to date = 25170.44
Total tax to date = 3928.41

    Tax code is 1037L

Annual salary is 54998 with 4.5% on top for on call
    Pension contributions of 11.3%

    Do you need anything else?

    Thanks

I think you have a tax rebate due to month 7 pay being so small

I'm not sure i will as I have been paid at my new employer and paid tax with them but as they didn't have my P45 when I started I filled in a P46 - but paid tax based on a 1000L tax code

Its the difference between the wage slip tax paid and P45 tax paid amounts that is confusing

P45 figures look fine but unable to check figures for month 6 as shown as Taxable pay to date = 2508.11 Looks like a digit missing here.

You have almost certainly under paid tax at this point. It looks like your old employer and new employer have given you a tax allowance for month 7. Can you give correct gross figure as above and the full gross tax details for new employer?

Sorry typo - should read taxable pay to date 25038.11

The gross pay from new employer is only for period 7 not year to date as they didn't have P45 and I filled in a P46

Gross Taxable pay was 3956.97 - tax paid was 717.71

Easiest thing might be to sit tight and see what my wage slip shows next month once my new employer adjusts my tax with my P45 rather than worrying now that I owe tax!

Tax deducted from month 6 payslip is correct.
There will be a tax rebate of £824 or so with your last payment.
Tax paid on your first wage from your new employer is about £865 less than should have been deducted due to both employers giving you a tax allowance and 20% band allowance. This will adjust when the P45 is operated so hang on to the tax rebate as you will need it then.

I see your tax code is a bit above the usual so assume you have something added, does this still apply in your new job as if not you will be under paying tax a little bit until sorted?

Thanks chrisbur - I think that makes sense - I won't get too excited if I get a nice surpries in my last pay! and yes the extra allowances still apply in my new role

This site is amazing - thanks so much for your help!

Just a quick update - I did indeed get a tax rebate today from my ex employer - not sure exactly how much as I was owed a little anyway - but I will hang on to it as advised as I am sure my new employer will take it off my next wage!

    Thanks again
