It's not even unfair, its just annoying. The world of work has many annoying features, perhaps especially so with a large company such as Morrisons, where policies are set at the top and feedback from the effects often never make it back to he policy setters.

OP, the shop can demand proof if they want. If he does not have it, he's perhaps best to simply turn up with what he does have, and hope that they don't make an issue of it.

Any Company that refuses a current up to date UK Passport and a N.I. number along with bank details is just being really silly and jobsworthy!
They do not even have N.I. Cards anymore, it is just a slip of paper and can take up to 6 weeks to arrive!

Just an update to let you know he rang this morning to explain and fortunately the woman was off so he ended up with one of the managers. They said absolutely no problem, not to worry at all. If he brought his passport and bank details and the number they would check everything themselves anyway on their payroll system.

Just goes to show that you've got to get past the person on the desk
sometimes. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
