claim tax on the work milage

Options
Dear all,

This may be a silly question but could not find a suitable answer on line so i thought id ask the forum. My company (NHS) will only pay me 26.5 pence for business miles that i do in my own car, i think the govt rate is 50p (maybe less) could one claim the difference back in tax. I only do at best 1000 miles a year. if i can claim back in tax does anyone know what proof i need to show for the miles that i am claiming for?

Regards

M

  • You need to fill our a form called a P87. It allows you to enter the amount you've been reimbursed and the amount your are entitled to be at the approved rate (45ppm) The HMRC will then adjust your tax code to take into account the relief on the difference. You'll just need to keep copies of your claims if you ever needed to prove you claim
  • thanks for the speedy reply, looking at my payslips i get paid milage a public transport rate which is 26.5p for all journeys which are not hospital business i.e conferences, training etc. these journeys are still mandatory for work however, i take it i can still claim the difference on the p87?!

for actually site visiting the cost is 55 pence ;) but the classification of what is a site visit and not is a grey area.

This thread is handy, as I only just learnt I can reclaim this element of my work mileage.

Does anyone know how far back I can go on this. For 12 years I have been using my car for occasional trips at work. I'm sure I cant go back that far, but it would be nice if I could do more than the current year. I have been writing the trips down in a diary.

For this year and each of the previous four tax years.
