Final pay

Hi everyone,

I just got my final pay and I'm not sure if it was calculated correctly. Would appreciate your opinion on this.

My contract with this company lasted 6 months and 8 days. I was on a £40k annual gross salary.

I gave them one month notice period (which is the expected period) in the mid of September and at this time I still had 9 days of holidays which I took immediately before my contract ending in mid October. So my final day in the office was October 2 and then I went on holidays or 9 days.

My final net pay was £413. I have no idea how this was calculated. I was 2 days in the office and 9 days on holidays. How much should I have received ?

Thanks

We don't know enough about your circumstances to be certain. But standard net pay for a month on £40K would be around £2,500. So £413 seems low for 11 days and high for 2 days. Presumably you haven't had a pay slip for it, are you expecting to get one, perhaps at the end of the month? Either way, contacting your ex-employer is the best way to get it sorted out.
  • what about using the salary calculator at http://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/ and see if the net rate equates to the daily rate?
  • 9 days holiday, I presume you pro ratard your total hotel to get this figure and are not talking about 9 days left from your total annual leave

I'm waiting for the payslip at the moment and I've already asked them to double-check the situation just to make sure everything is ok.

My net monthly pay was ~£2500. Maybe they are not paying the holidays ?? During the 6 months I worked there I had a total of 12 holidays (earning 2 holidays per month).

Looks to me like 2 days pay.
If we say there are 260 working days in the year then 2 days would give 2/260 of £40000 = £308 (rough figures)
Assume tax code of 1000L = freepay for month of £833
    £833 less £308 = £525 which would give tax rebate of £105
    £308 + £105 = £413

But best to get the payslip first to confirm.

Which is what I did to get the monthly net, but the daily net doesn't equate. However, chrisbur has provided a probable explanation for why it could be two days pay, so we'll see whether the payslip agrees.
  • How did you word your resignation letter?
For instance, was your termination date to be effective 2 October?
What date did you hand in your notice?
What was your annual holiday entitlement (including bank holidays)?
When did the holiday year start?

    You're not being very clear.

How much is your annual holidays including bank holidays?
How many holidays have you actually taken inc bank holidays?

Thanks again for the responses guys.

    Answers:

Termination date was October 15 but my last day in the office was October 2 (I went on 9 days holidays after that).

I wrote them a letter to give them 1 month notice on October 16.

Holiday entitlement was 25 days + 8 bank holidays per year.

The holiday year started at the beginning of the year.

I took 12 holidays during the 6 months and 8 days that I was there + all bank holidays within that period.

I just received an email from them and they say it looks like there was some kind of mistake but are not sure at the moment. Will wait for more news.

I wrote them a letter to give them 1 month notice on October 16. So I'm guessing the letter dated/handed in on Monday, 15 September so that the one month's notice meant the last day of employment was 15 October. (Notice period runs from the start of the day after it is received.)

Holiday entitlement was 25 days + 8 bank holidays per year. (So entitlement for the year is 33 days and thus your entitlement

The holiday year started at the beginning of the year. So 1 January.

I took 12 holidays during the 6 months and 8 days that I was there + all bank holidays within that period. So your start date was 7 April and your entitlement would have been about 17 days pro rata - of which you have taken 12 "ordinary" days (including those final 9) plus 5 bank holidays, a total of 17 days. So we agree that your accrued holiday was all used up during the course of your employment.

Good to know that they appear to be recognising they made an error. Hope all is cleared up soon.
