HMRC making life hell

I got caught out in the PAYE overpayment last year. HMRC decided that I had to self certificate my PAYE earnings I tried to registered online as told but dont even know what im suppose to register under (phone just says they are busy and hangs up) I've now received a £100 fine for late payment and they are now going to fine me £10 a day for 90 days.

Im out of my depth as this is an issue from a PAYE job (ASDA ) not self employment the whole thing is a mess. The union just gave me a letter to send basically telling the tax office to sort it out with ASDA, I've since left ASDA so no help from there and I can't afford to hire an accountant to sort this mess out.

Is there any free/ very cheap services that can help me deal with this.

Many thanks

  • What did the letter they sent you actually say? Can you scan it, and take out all the identifying info and post it on here?

You really will need to speak to them, and explain that you can't register as self employed as you weren't, and go through with them your actual earnings (have you got your P60s to hand?) and then calculate what you owe and ten pay it.

If you have your P60s for the year in question, and post the figures, then maybe we can help you calculate what you owe.

Best time to call them is first thing in the morning, lines theoretically open at 08:00 but I've been told in another thread that they actually open at 07:45.
  • HMRC messed up my tax consecutively for 4 years then presented me with a bill for over £3000. I ended up getting an accountant to fill in the forms for me. She filled in my self assessment form and spoke to them because I haven't the patience.

I'm now paying them back per month and they have the audacity to charge me interest for their incompetence!!

They may alter your tax code to make up the short fall. They changed mine so I was paying nearly £100pw in tax alone (I'm paid weekly).

If you can, try to record the conversations you have with them or do what I did only correspond with them in writing. It may be long winded but you will have it in black and white. Stops the any misunderstanding.

TBH they are incompetent, not fit for purpose and chase the little man who can't afford to fight back and let the big fish go.

They already have my earnings they were suppose to sort it with asda and garnish it back from my wages over 2013 and never did, I think I've now managed to sort the back tax but have been told with fines added I now owe them 1200.00 in total rather than the £125.00 and they can't help me with the fines that as it's a different department that I have to put in writing. im just banging my head against a brick wall im being punished for their mess it's enough to send me to the nut house, I've half a mind just to quit work so I don't have to deal with this BS :(

    Thanks everyone

Why do you work for now? Would they have someone who could try and help you sort this out? It would be in their interests to help you as a member of their staff, even if only to give you some idea of what to do next.

The PAYE job I now hold is with a temping agency and don't want to mention it there as I need the work so don't want them to see me as hassle.
