  • Out of interest why can't you smoke out the back now anyway?

My local hospital banned smoking in the grounds. All the staff do now congregate on the road outside the main entrance instead. It's silly because they do have areas that could be used for smoking away from other staff and patients, but rather than thinking it through imposed a blanket ban.

I can see exactly the same thing happening at my workplace. However, have got to say I can see staff raising the proverbial 2 fingers to this anyway. Also can't see who exactly is going to check up on it!

'Out the back' is business premises - this is where all smokers go at present (staff and visitors). Out the front is the main street (not business premises).

Out of interest I just googled UNISON's viewpoint (Local Authority workplace). Seems like they aren't so keen on banning staff from smoking outside (whilst maintaining a PC stance of course ;) ).

Hmmm yeah, they also think that employers should give paid time off to get help stop smoking... ridiculous

Ah ok gotcha, then yes you are right, it would look worse and they couldn't stop you bar health and safety reasons might prevent you from smoking within a certain yardage of the front door
