Debt with shop direct help please

Not sure if this the right place so please accept my apologies if not and please move to appropriate thread if possible thank you.

I have an outstanding debt from very of £2419.24. I was paying very back however they were throwing chunks of interest on top resulting in my debt increasing and getting no were in clearing the debt. I asked very to help put in place a payment plan of a reduced rate of £20 per week. They declined and said they would only accept £200 per month.
I then got help from step change and through them payed a reduced rate of £50 per month, however very were still adding interest and the kept increasing further. Therefore I ending my agreement with step change knowing that my account would be passed onto a debt collectors agency. I knew from passed debt that they would have a final bill and I could agree a payment plan with them to clear the debt with no interest.
The situation now is I received a letter from 1st change saying they have taken control of the account basically saying " I hereby give notice of the assignment of the debt due to us from you in respect of the balance of £2419.24 outstanding on your shop direct finance company"
They go on to say the account was legally assigned to 1st credit on 26/09/2014 however this is the first letter I have received from them. The second part of the letter a separate letter says 1st credit are the legal owner of the debt, then further down RMA resolve have been appointed by 1st credit and now any dealings will go through them???

Can anyone explain what has happened and why two companies are collecting the debt?
I don't have any letters separately from RMA resolve yet? But have read they are horrible.

Any advice would be massively appreciated. Thank you

1st credit are now the legal owners of your account. They may have paid a couple of hundred for it.

They have appointed RMA to collect the debt.

It is a shame that interest was not frozen sooner but at least there is a fixed balance now, and an opportunity to settle at a reduced amount if you can come up with a lump sum.

Alternatively you can now set up a payment plan with them based on what you can afford.
  • I was on a DMP and had enough to make a f & F to RMA. When my debt was transferred to them I didn't really here from there at all until I contacted them about settlements. Some DCA's are ok to deal with and I found them much easier than Shopdirect's inhouse collectors. Good luck

Thank you for your reply. So I rang 1st credit and they told me to deal with RMA. When dealing with these I can offer to pay what I can afford then and there isn't much they can do about it? Also I know to only deal in writing so if I write a letter saying I can only £30 per month would this be acceptable? If not are there certain letter or criteria to send to these people? Thank you again.

Well, yes. They could take court action and may threaten it, but they have to think whether it is worth the extra cost, and it probably isn't

That's a fairly long repayment period but if that's what you can afford they would probably accept it as long as it was justified by a financial statement.

There are template letters on the National Debtline site or what about using the CAB's online resource. This is the Cornwall version

    https://cornwall.cabmoney.org.uk/

and there's an overview of the process and the standard letters at

As getting my life straight posted, if you can save a sum on the side you can at some point offer to settle with a full & final settlement deal.

What usually happens if your only making small repayments is that the debt gets sold on again, so don't be surprised if this dance comes on again !!!!
