Denby 'Bakewell' 2pt casserole dish with handkes

I have just purchased this from local charity shop mint condition, rang Denby to ask if it can go into oven but they advised against as it does not say on base that it can.

Has anyone used one similar for oven or are they not a casserole dish but a tureen.

Luckily it was only a couple of pound but was so hoping it was ovenproof :o

Personally I wouldn't. You have got a bargain and if Denby cant say it is ovenproof and it isnt marked underneath then I would play safe and use it as a serving dish instead. Sounds a bargain!

Hmm - sells at £45 on the open market.

  • Why would they make a casserole dish that cant go in the oven? There would be no point, so it must be ok.

My Mum has this set and it's always gone in the oven no problem since I can remember...

  • I know this link isn't for the casserole dish but it is a souffl! dish and these go in the oven, nothing stamped on the base to indicate it can be used in the oven either.

There are lots of the "casserole dishes" on Ebay. Some for as little as five pounds, and some have clearly been used in the oven.
The set is from about 1980, I think? Long before we had instructions on everything.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well. The point you make (only said much better than me) was that the souffl! dishes would be used in the oven so I don't see why the casserole dish couldn't even though it didn't say on it.

My mother had a lot of Denby of the same era.

She used to wreck it by putting plates under the grill and forgetting it so it would crack.

However, the cook ware was OK in the oven. I would check for cracks and not cook in very hot ovens.

  • Sounds like Denby are covering themselves as there's no explicit stamp saying it can be used in the oven.
I have two Pyrex casserole dishes which don't have any markings about ovenproof-ness but they're absolutely fine in the oven.
If you're not 100% sure you could stick the dish on a baking tray/ roasting tray the first tiime, to catch anything if the dish does fail!
