Weird Avast pop-up

I have vista ultimate on my laptop and use chrome (but have FF & IE). I have the paid for version of avast.

My preferred home page and search engine is https://www.google.co.uk

Of late, a pop-up appears:-

AVAST. Removal of poorly rated add-on's requires you to select your default browser and search provider.

Please choose your new search provider and homepage.

Yahoo or Microsoft Bing

I cancel and move on. What's going on here? does anyone know please?

I get this on the same setup with Firefox, but I can't see a fix.

Out of curiosity I looked at the webuser forums and they have two threads on the same subject. For the most part, they talk "over my head" and the second thing is there isn't an easy solution as I see it. I was tempted to copy/paste my post here to there, but thought I'd be labelled spamming, so resisted. The thing is, if people do get this problem, a pooling of reply posts seems a good idea.Keep in touch if you resolve it.

You could have chosen not to install this so called 'feature' by using the custom install option.

Read this step by step guide here which shows how to remove the Avast crap that you don't require e.g. Avast Browser Cleanup.

Yes, unticking Browser cleanup in the tools makes the nag go away. It's usually one of the first jobs on an Avast install. It does give some false positives flagging some good add ons as bad.
