Buying a Lordship

Options
It's a running joke with my other half that he should be a Lord. I have seen online that you can buy the title. Now, I know it's not legit and he can't really strut around calling himself Lord Joe Bloggs and rock up to the house of Lords but I thought it would be a good 'tongue in cheek' present for Christmas. (not spending ££££, seen some for about £15)

I have been looking in to it and the info out there is a little confusing for me! some sites claim these are scams, but if we are aware that it's a bit of fun between us and he gets a posh looking piece of paper, is it really a scam?

Does anyone have any dealings or knowledge around this that could advise me a little better?

  • I know this will sound boring but use the golden rule of buying...if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is... If it sounds like a scam it probably is. Can't you or someone you know just make and print one? Or what about a "front page news paper" I used a website like that a few year ago and I believe they are still running!

Yep, I did this years ago. A friend was legally able to do something with name changes - I have a beautiful scroll/parchment with Lady... on it. I think mine technically means I can have my first name as "Lady". It's never been seen by anyone outside my home and of course I dont use the title

You can change your name to whatever you like. So, if you wanted to be known as 'Lord Joe Bloggs', you can. There are websites out there that will happily sell you a fancy bit of paper that says that you are 'Lord Joe Bloggs'. If you're happy paying £8.99 (or whatever) for a fancy looking bit of paper, and realise it's all a joke, then that's all fine and dandy. But by acquring that bit of paper you have no more right to call yourself 'Lord Joe Bloggs' than anyone else.

P.S. You can buy Lordships of the Manor, and Scottish baronial titles. But they cost more than £15.

When you see the way that some of those at Westminster carry on, i'm sure they must have bought their Lordships off the Internet.

  • I think as long as you're aware it's unlikely to give you any 'special powers' then there's no harm in it - although like crystal_fire suggested, perhaps designing one yourself and getting it printed on nice paper etc could be a good idea - cheaper and probably just as useful! :)

Can't really help with this specific enquiry but I bought someone a 'His Lordship' mug this year so there are other related gifts you could buy if you decide to look for something else.
