When he gets a tax form he will use the "employment" parts.

    available on the HMRC website

Who is to be his employer?

As it is during a tax year, he will still have to fill in a tax return for his self-employment income.

the immediate thing to do when he starts his new employment is fill in a P46. They will ask if he has a P45. He won't have because it's what you get when you leave a job. Instead he needs to complete the P46, which his employer should be able to provide. If the employer looks blank, he can find this on the HMRC website.

On the P46, he says "This is my only or main job", and it may ask what he's been doing before, can't remember.

He will still need to do tax returns for a year or two, he can ask HMRC to stop sending them when it's clear his only income is from employment and he may get lucky!

What Savvy_Sue said. On the Self Assessment form for 2007-2008 which he'll still have to complete, there's a section which asks if Self Employment ended and the date as well as a section for his income from PAYE which will also ask for tax paid. Any refund (because he made a loss on SE for example) is paid by cheque.

Also, I'd be phoning National Insurance otherwise he'll still be getting the quarterly bill for Class 2 NI.
