Monday 20th October - What small DFW things will you do today?

When we start out on the DFW trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the gym .

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free.

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending.

So be proud of those small steps, they really are important

    Good Morning,

    Plans for today are:

Write down my menu plan so I don't forget what I have planned.
    General housework.
Bag up loose change ready to take into town on Wednesday.
Washing, using the quick cycle, 1/2 laundry tablet and put on heated airer.
Use thermos flask for my coffee during the day.
Use up bits and pieces from the fridge for my lunch.
Crochet a couple more squares for our blanket.

Think this is enough for me to get along with.

    Take care all.

    Morning all :)

Thanks for starting the thread Ziggy.

Still feeling a bit sorry for myself today with this strange cold that I seem to be trying to fight off. I am half wondering if it could be a reaction to last week's flu jab - never had one before, but it is possible I suppose

    So far I have:

    Checked banks

Put venison, onions and mushrooms in the SC with stock, port and a tablespoon of quince jelly for a pie later :)

Put on a wash - it looks quite nice outside atm and I hope to at least partially dry it outside.

    Cleared up kitchen.

    Still to do:

Clean a few brass and copper items and take to sales unit. People seem to be buying them to add a bit of autumn colour / atmosphere to their houses. I suppose adding a few inexpensive accessories is a cheaper way to freshen up your home than redecorating, (that is certainly what I do!) and people like the vintage theme :)

Ask OH to do a small repair on another item, so that can go down tomorrow.

    Washing on line when done

Small tidy up, nothing too strenuous

    Make pie later

    Should be a NSD :D

    Morning All

What book is it you won Ziggy?

DawnW - I'd be surprsised if it wasnt the flu jab to be honest. Its like when you take little babies for jabs, they almost always have side affects. Hope you feel better soon though.

Peony - I need to write a new menu plan, am feeling a bit bored of my staple dishes. Whats on yours this week?

Headoutthesand - How old is your DS1? I am realising that the cash deposit account that I opened for DS as a baby & have stashed every birthday & christmas cheque ever since is someething I wont be able to get away with for much longer now DS is aware of money, things he wants to buy, & is being taught how to budget. I am thinking I may come up with a rule for him like he has to bank 50% of his money still, what do you do?

In response to your comments yesterday Foxgloves big screen TVs are definately still a prestige item for some people. We do have a large TV but its 7 years old & was bought & paid for with a bonus my husband earned. Its not something I'd dream of paying for at extortionate rates that a catalogue or Brighthouse as you mention would charge.
Its a funny thing, in some circles you'd be considererd a chav for having a TV in your front room instead of a grand piano...I find it quite interesting following whatever the new 'I dont have a TV' is these days.
A better acadote was shared by a friend the other day, she said she had a little boy to tea recently and he is always dressed in head to toe labels. He told her over dinner that he has to have school dinners because the cooker at home is broken & his parents cant afford to fix it. Friend said his parents would be mortified to know she knows. Where are the priorities there??

Another day on the penny pinching express here.
    1) Read electric & gas meter
    2) Eat up leftover soup for lunch
    3) Heating off
    4) Go for a walk as my exercise
    5) Going through old childrens book box to check if there is anything we havent read, activity books to complete etc, before the christmas incoming!
    6) Have done some nectar adpoints

    Have a good day all.

    Hi Bob

It's " Never saw It Coming" by Linwood Barclay - I either borrow books from the library or they are comp wins - I never buy books anymore

My son is 11 now and he has a really healthy bank balance as has continued in the habit of banking at least 50% of any birthday/Christmas monies, and will even sell any unwanted/duplicate gifts/toys etc and save for anything expensive he really wants to buy - he recently bought his self the Xbox 1 after we trawled the sites to find the best offer of course ;) I dont think you can ever start too young

  • Hello all.
Missed you at the weekend. Kept the DFW faith by batch cooking Bolognese, curry sauce and soup in the slow cooker. Line dried laundry (warm and windy - hooray!). No spending apart from groceries (stuck to list, remembered vouchers) and petrol. Two long dog walks couple of sneaky snoozes about sums up my weekend.
You have reminded me about the time my sons friend (about 4/5 at the time) told me that he was the richest person in his family and that he had lent his Mum and Dad all his savings (a few thousand - he was very specific) because they had run out of money. He wasn't worried because they had agreed to pay him back with interest! I remember thinking - too much info!! His Mother would have been mortified.
Anyway, am at work today, got lift, earning and no spending. All meals from home/plan. Have checked Bank Accounts - need to update my signature.
    Best wishes x

    Debt-free and Proud!
    Afternoon all,

I'm continuing to work through my cupboards and freezer for meals. I seem to have a lot of frozen fish and prawns, and lots of rice, so any exciting fish and rice recipes would be appreciated!

Off to the cinema tonight with tickets saved from the sweet wrappers - gifted by my sister who has two young children and said that she won't have time to go! And my friend is driving so I shouldn't spend any money today, as I will eat before I go and avoid the sweet counter, or take something from the cupboards!

When people have NSD, do they include petrol in that? I drive to work every day, so of course that is spending money, but it's unavoidable. Any NSDs I have will be 'no extra spending days!'

8 days until payday, at which point I'm going to start withdrawing cash at the start of each week, and leaving my card at home.
  • I am being brave and posting mine today too. It is really grim here in Lil old South Wales, grey and drizzly 'wet' rain.

Tucked up in work so using bosses heating,
Charged my Phone here to out of necessity.
All meals for all of us from home.
    Paid rent online.
    Checked online banking.
Hubby posted off PPI claim form.
Hubby posted off S/C DMP info so hopefully this will get us back on track.

This part of MSE has definitely made me more aware of gas and electric used in general and also food budgets so trying to keep on top of it all.
    Weightloss -36.5lb/64lb.
    Christmas savings £200/£800.
    Hol savings £300 /£500.
    Birthday savings £50 /£100.
    100 days #20 Credit union £40/£1150
