    Hi greenglide

Yes, the problem is down to my anxiety and foolishly asking HMRC for advice. What should have been simple now feels totally out of control.

I am using the online self assessment, and did not put the WPS refund on my return (which I now believe was correct as it should not be taxable). I just had an anxiety attack after submitting, and phoned HMRC yesterday morning, when the telephone adviser seems to either be useless or misunderstood me.

Do you think I should do an amended return, still leaving the refund out, but putting further info in the notes to clarify and maybe attach my award notice and Lifetime Allowance Statement?

It might be better to avoid muddying the waters further and just wait for the home visit - your sister could be with you if this would help allay your anxiety?

One would assume that the HMRC clerk who will make the home visit understands taxable and non taxable lump sums/income etc.

You might wish to print out the relevant information from the links, or simply have them available on line so that you can point out the relevant information to your visitor.

Make sure that your documents are in date order and that you have available full details of all income, including savings income, for the current and previous tax years where relevant.
  • When MyCSP finally paid my WPS, returned to me because I never married, I informed the Tax people that I wanted to pay a lump sum rather have them amend the monthly tax (my payroll officer said "under no circumstances let them take it off your pay) I am still waiting to see how much they will charge.

I think I am luckier than you in that I took part in an early exit scheme and my WPS was refunded on time, at the same time as my pension lump sum was paid. I wasn't given an option to chose a pension instead, but I think I would still have preferred the cash refund anyway.

I believe in my case that the WPS is NOT taxable at all. I am just in a mess now because of getting an anxiety attack and doubting myself. I hope that you get a reasonable outcome. Best wishes. x

xylophone - thanks again for your help in isolating the relevant point and finding the supporting evidence.

I see your point about waiting for a HMRC visit. This is so hard for me as one of the things that feeds my anxieties is the feeling of not being in control and wanting to be doing something positive to get things resolved more quickly. LOL

This is perfectly understandable - nobody enjoys being in limbo.
