Don't forget the Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. .....
After a series of punctures on that Pinnacle bike, I fitted a pair of those.

I haven't had a single puncture since and I don't notice any difference in the ride.

Thanks for all the replies. Never thought this many people would reply and give advice. I think he is going to go for http://www.ukbikesdepot.com/m89b0s800p12977/RIDGEBACK_Speed_Mens_Ex-Display_Hybrid_Bike_2014. It has mudguards built in and a rack fitting as well.I know you could probably get a better deal second hand but things could go wrong and you have no guarantee then. His mum has already bought him some decent lights and also they have a pump. His work is in the cycle to work scheme but because its only a seasonal job (though he probably get kept on) he may be out of work after christmas. Thanks again for helping.

I like the look of this one http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kona-dew-2014/

Kona make good bikes. Comes in below your budget and leaves you a bit to buy mudguards and lights with.

I've been riding a Claud Butler Classic for seven years and it's been terrirfic for the sort of distances you are talking about. It's a solid, robust, well made bike; a very good all rounder for starting out. It's Easy to ride and comes with mudguards and rack which can be handy for keeping clothes clean and carrying stuff. The only repairs I've ever had to do was to fix occasional punctures and replace one palstic pedal. 21 gears covers most terrain well but you probably won't be racing past many road bikes!

RRP is £299.99 but lots of places have them circa £270 - which will leave a bit towards lock, hlemet, lights, hi-vis jacket/vest and gloves, all of which I reckon you'll need

RachrubyD the bike you've highlighted is similar type but it looks like you've found yourself a good deal at that price.
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!

Excellent ! Looks like a great bike for the money and should be great for commuting. Get ready to lose him for hours at the weekend when he goes out for longer rides - then get ready for lots of bike stuff to start turning up at your home. It will all have been in the sale ;). I have seen quoted elsewhere 'If I die and my Wife sells my gear for what she thinks I've paid for it someone's getting a bargain!' Certainly applies in my case :rotfl:
