What to wrap christmas cake in when storing?

Hi,

I have just made my first christmas cake :T I am so excited! It was a hot toddy cake recipe as recommended on another thread and it looks lovely.

Anyway, I know I need to wrap it and store it in an airtight tin. Do I wrap in cling film, tin foil, paper or a combination?

I want to make sure it stays at its best.

Thanks in advance.x

Hopefully someone with more knowhow will come along soon, but I wrap mine first in greaseproof and then in foil and then into a cake tin.
  • Cake Box, Ours is big one. Then it can gently be fed some warming orange and whisky to make it moist. (Small glass about half full, mix orange and whisky) You can also use sherry. Ours was baked yesterday, and will be drinking its whisky orange until Tuesday, when he will be smothered in Lime Marmalade, and topped with chopped almonds.

He will then be smothered in Marzipan and iced. He will sleep until Christmas, then last until February,

EDit, I always use cake box upside down, cake sits on lid, on cake plate, and box covers it.

  • Just tasted ours, as the base was on the side. Goooooing to be a belter this year. Now, covering the cakes, no no no no no no no no no. Soak the blighter in orange and whisky! That will keep it fresh and nicely moist. The only thing it should be covered in is Marzipan and Royal Icing!

I wrap ours in greaseproof and foil. If you are at all worried about it keeping, we finish eating ours around March.

Thanks all! I am afraid I was too eager and have tasted this one (with it being a tester) and I am not so sure about it.

As. I said, i used a hot toddy recipe and although lovely, it seems lacking in density and richness? Would that be helped by feeding it more? I am going to be making another 2 ready for christmas and am a bit worried about using the same recipe. Normally when eating christmas cake, I can only manage a small bit but i have actually managed a wedge :D ...oops!

If BoPsie was in your pad, the cake would not make new year!

I used this recipe for my first attempt at a Christmas cake last week, and i'm afraid we had to test to make sure it was edible.........needless to say there is none left everyone loved it including my mother-in-law :-)

I used Aldi's luxury mixed fruit, to save on buying several different bags of fruit.

Thanks again! I think this is what I will do. I am just s bit dubious now because I like to test what I've made and really don't want to do that again. Although I like Christmas cake, it is a bit much to devour this one and another before christmas just as practice!!
