State pension paid in advance or arrears?

FIL past away last month, I made a thread about issues with the will, so far that is not causing any problems.

The council wanting money yet reluctant to give it back is now the issue.

Received a letter today from the Department of Works and Pensions saying he was over paid by a payment that went into his account on the Monday after he passed away.

I thought most benefits are paid in arrears?

Just wanted to get my facts right before paying them back, After trying to claim his overpaid rent back and ask why the council tax still want money for a period after he passed away falls on untrained ears that don't know the answers.

thanks.

State pension, if paid weekly is paid in advance if started before 6 April 2010.
  • He retired a long time before 2010. If its in advance then its money that went in the bank on that week should not have been paid.

Shame the rent department are no swift in deciding who owes who.

If paid in advance and paid weekly then the money will be credited to his bank account in the payday. To achieve this the payment is calculated some four days before this.

Depending on when DWP are informed of the death they may have to recall a payment that has been issued but not credited to the account or they will want repayment if the money has already been credited.

Currently they pay up to the payday after the date of death, they don't recover any "part weeks" although this changes for the new State Pension from 6/4/2014.
  • Informed via the registry office one something system?

Informed on the Friday, 2 days after he passed away. So the money they paid on the Monday was too late to stop and as you say in advance so that needs to be paid back to them.

    thanks
