Help with jacobs baliffs

Ok ill try to make this as short as possible

2006 I had a pub in joint names with step father
I had hardly anything to do with this pub but my name was on paper work. He ran it
Got into trouble and left it
Owed money

He died this year
Today I have letter from Jacobs regarding a bailiff calling to take items for a debt with Bedford council. In both our names.
I've not heard from anyone in 8 years about the pub of of any debt or knowledge of any.
He's now deceased
Isn't this statute barred.
I don't want to call Jacobs. And calling the council will result in them just saying to Speak with Jacobs and pay up.
I don't want bailiffs coming here.
What do I do.

  • This is business rates? There will most likely be a liability order on it from the magistrates court, obtained at the time. That's how the council have been able to pass it to bailiffs

The only way to find out is to contact the council.

Then maybe business debtline - their factsheet's here:

So what can I do regarding the debt
    They used
My name to get the license for the premises and that's it.
Now it looks like my name has been stuck on everything without me knowing.
I don't want these bailiffs turning up.

It looks like joint and several liability and it may be difficult to avoid this.

Monday morning you need to get the detail from the council and discuss it with BDL.

I presume you've had the 7-day letter so you will be getting a visit unless you can (a)get the council to pull it back or (b) reach payment agreement with the bailiff head office.
