Same employer - different department

Hello, ive been working at a firm for 12 years in one department. There is now a vacancy in a different department within the same firm -at the same office, which I would be interested in applying for. My only worry is that i wont even be considered for this new position as I dont think they would like to lose me from what I do at the moment. Does anyone know if there is any sort of rules that means my employers cant just dismiss me a a "no" for this new position if the only reason is that they want me to stay where I am ? I do have the qualifications & experience of what is needed for the new position.
thanks
thanks

No law says they cannot stop you applying for other internal opportunities.
Sense says they would be daft to because ultimately you can just resign and thus not only does your department lose you but the whole company does.
Just need to have a sensible discussion with your manager0 -
Thank you for the points raised InsideInsurance - think I will go for it.
Also, the mere mention of the words sensible and manager in one sentence have me smiling - you have to work here to understand !:)0
