    I agree with BobQ - it may be sensible to get a solicitors letter done - have you actually spoken to your Dad's Partner?

    it may be worth contacting her and saying that you do not want to have to involve solicitors, you understand that she is grieving, but you are concerned that either you, or she, may find yourselves in difficulties if it turns out that her actions are not in accordance with the will. You can also say to her that in relation to things which belonged to your Dad, if it turns out that you have not been left these you would like the opportunity to buy them from the state rather than their being sold or otherwise disposed of.

    As your dad was not married, his partner has no automatic rights at all (except to jointly owned property, if any) so it would be in her interests to produce a will if one exists.

    Can't you apply for probate yourself on the grounds that you don't believe there's a will?
