Thursday 16th October - What small DFW things will you do today?

When we start out on the DFW trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the gym .

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free.

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending.

So be proud of those small steps, they really are important :money:

Morning Ziggy, and everyone who comes along later :j

I have lots I could do today, but some of it really depends on the weather.....

    I am hoping to:
Clean out the chickens pen, if it doesn't rain Done, no rain yet, for a change!
Peg out the washing, if it doesn't rain (a bit repetitive here :o) Done, hope it has /will dry a bit. I have put in another load, but it looks as though it is going to rain now :(
All HM meals, and I am trying to decide if I can go for another NSD. I have a small shopping list on the board in my kitchen, but is it essential today? Hmm... must investigate. Won't need to spend anything today, had soup from the freezer for lunch, and will have some lamb and mint sausages that I found in the freezer for supper, with potatoes, cabbage, HG carrots and onion gravy :)
Housework :( I don't like doing it, but it needs doing and doesn't depend on the weather! Done

I will take the dog out in a minute, and then get on with some other tasks that dropped off my list earlier in the week. I have chilli jam to make, and an old stoneware sherry barrel to clean for my sales unit, among other things :)

Hope everyone has a nice day :)

Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
    Good morning all
Ziggy -interesting. I always find Toysrus expensive so interested to hear they are best for lego.
Dawn - ain't that the truth. Love the Joan rivers quote on housework, "I hate doing the housework, you get everything clean & in 6 months you have to do it all again" or thereabouts, with apologies to Joan Rivers :)

    Me today.
Well we are on the ropes re the overdraft. We've paid all our bills but with a week to go till payday with food, plus travel to pay out for I don't think we can stay in credit. It's a blow.
If we hadn't of received the £250 rebate from the gas & electricity I think we'd have ended the month at £500 od. Which is a lot I know but it's due to not having an income for a couple of months (long story)
I think we ought to be able to make it under £50 OD this month unless their are any disasters. Which is a good result I suppose? So hard to see something as positive when it's still negative (value wise) Next month I don't know what will happen yet. I should recieve further funds from insurance but I'm finding it hard to get hold of the loss adjustor. Funny that.
Anyway. Meeting a friend this morning who I haven't seen for ages. So that will be nice.
Have nectar point rewards so can spend that on some shopping.
Have packed son's after school snacks.
Taking a library free hire dvd back today to avoid penalty charge.
Watching several items that are on son's birthday or Christmas lists on ebay for a fraction of the new price.
    Think that's it!

    Have a good day everyone
    Bob

    Morning Campers,
Usual bits of daily money-saving from me this morning. Apart from doing next week's meal plans, making bread rolls & writing shopping list, I'm prioritising my 'Project Prepare for Winter' tasks today:
*Dug out clay pots, baking tin, etc, to experiment with making a Flowerpot Room Heater. Well, have just set it up, upstairs in my little HQ room. No heating on yet, so thought it would be a good test of whether it will put out sufficient heat to make a difference.
*Next job (after caffiene fix) is to turn out the Presents Box, remind myself how many cards/wrapping paper, etc, I bought in the sales, & make a list of all presents already purchased & what we still need to buy. Lots of winter birthdays in our family too. Will write cards for all birthdays up to end of Jan, & wrap gifts because I will see one or two of these people, plus other family members may be able to deliver the odd thing which will save postage. The usual thing......Being organised always saves us money!!
OK, kettle going on.....then back up here for festive planning. No heating on at all yet, except for towel radiator.
    Have a great day, everyone.

  • Hello all,

Getting back to normal after tooth extraction - managed to eat some (free) cake at lunchtime :). Made a nice change from soup and yogurt.

Have been reading your tips, talking to colleagues, and my next step towards being properly educated and financially savvy is to take regular meter readings and know how much I am being charged per unit (haven't got a clue at the moment). Man turned up to read our meters yesterday evening - no doubt in response to my e-mail to the energy company with attached photo of the gas meter. I am not concerned but glad that they are checking and hope we might now get an accurate bill.

I confess I have used the tumble dryer this week - had a load of dog towels, human towels, bedding from the weekend before last and the airer was full of clothing - and it has been lashing with rain. Maybe I need to invest in one of those heated airers - I'd just need to find a space for it in our (very small) house.

I'm also minded to do some gift and card preparation over the next few weeks (rather than doing it all at the last minute). I have put a few things to one side already. We also have a lot of winter (December!) birthdays - including mine! I feel a list coming on.

Don't get too downhearted about the OD Bob. We would have been in the same position except that OH got some extra (cash in hand) work last weekend so we have hung on by a very thin thread. He gets paid next Thursday and I think we will make it...(still haven't done any selling).

We are reducing our OD by £200 per month (currently at £1300) and I get really panicky if I think we aren't going to achieve that. Partly because it is fee free until next April and it needs to be gone before we start having to pay exorbitant charges.

    Best wishes x

    Can I join you all?

It seems that it is getting harder and harder to keep heads above water these days. I will go through our household budget tomorrow and see where we can make savings.

I know that I can make small cutbacks, so here goes. Trying to be positive and keep my worry head from surfacing.

    January 2025 Grocery Challenge: £220.00/£59.47
January 2025 NSD: 0/30 (unplanned spending)

    Hello
I cycle to work and back which saves me a couple of quid. I am currently resisting the lure of the chocolate machine at work (only an hour to go - I can do it). Also going to lift the liver out of the freezer for the dinner tomorrow night :)
Saving for Christmas 2017 £120/£400
  • Stayed at home all day :)
Do need to nip to the supermarket for something for tea later but will try and do a nice cheap tea.

SS glad to hear your tooth is feeling better after your horrible dentist trip. Re overdrafts, I am self employed and find it so demotivating when you just can't make it stretch sometimes. Not glad to hear we are in the same leaky boat but hopefully we'll both get there eventually!
