OP's brain may have just exploded. :D

Yes it has, but I must thank Niftydigits for trying to help me.

I installed DivX downloaded lots of bits of film then it still didn't work.

I then did the more sensible thing of loading just one film and trying to find out what I am doing wrong.

When I played back the disc here on the PC, there was finally a bit of film but it was upside down!!

I am more than fed up now.

You need to use the newly installed Divx Converter to convert your films. Once converted, you can burn them as data to a DVD or play them via USB drive plugged into the DVD player.

I did use the divx converter they all looked like they converted ok but they didn't end up on the dvd. I did have film off my phone and film off my husbands digital camera so there was a mix maybe that caused a problem

They don't need to be on a DVD. You can put them on a USB flash drive(formatted to FAT/FAT32) and plug that into the DVD player.

"Didn't end up on the DVD"......I really don't know what it is that you are doing. Just take it one step at a time.

    Manual

Your DVD player is quite limited in the files that it can play.

There are alternatives to you using the DVD player to play these files, dependent on the equipment that you have now.

If the files are converted from mp4 to a format the dvd player can play it will certainly work on a usb drive.

google mp4 to avi convertor. Plenty of free options.

Why are you quoting my post?? I already suggested they can and should use a USB drive.
Though the player is appears limited in the resolution of files that it can play via USB.

Thanks to everyone here for giving me suggestions for my problem.

Thought I would give an update.

I tried everything suggested here but still no luck.

I then remembered my son has loaded a programme which I used successfully last year to convert videos for using in the DVD. I had a job locating the files but when I did, luckily for me the name of the programme appears occasionally throughout the film because it is free and to get rid of that, you have to pay. We decided we could live with it popping up now and then and good we did because I got the name of it.

The programme is AVS Video Converter. It was simple to do (I like simple) you just browse your files and stick them in, then convert and lastly burn to disk. Excellent!!
