When I came to the UK 14+ years ago I was quite astonished at how many things people here get for free.

In South Africa nothing is free and there is no welfare state. You pay for schooling, you buy your own text books, you pay to go to uni and there is no such thing as student loans, you pay for medical care, you pay for dental care, you pay for your own pension, etc. Everything people get free here people in South Africa have to pay for out of their own pockets. It is not paid for throught taxes or national insurance.

Those that don't work have to rely on friends and family to support them until they are once again employed. So people are far less fussy about the type of work that they are prepared to do.

Dad was telling me about health care before the NHS.
His parents paid into a Dr s practice a weekly sub ( a bit like insurance policy) so the family were covered if they needed health care and any drugs prescribed came directly from the little pharmacy at the Drs.
Dad stayed with the same Dr once nhs came along and although the original Drs sold the practice in the early 80's he is essentially still with the same practice today.
It also covered a midwife so essential care to pay for really.
Did not include the 'Laying In' nurse my Grandmother used for first month.
When my sister was born Mum went into a Private Maternity home as although first child was not entitled to have baby in hospital. She stayed in for 10 days (1962) but then had my brother and me at home.
Dad has never had a work pension but has done what generations before him did and bought Shares so the Dividends were his yearly pension. Basic State pension as well but not on offer when he started buying shares.

In the USA approximately one third of income is paid into their healthcare scheme. To us that is a huge amount on top of taxes:eek::eek:.

Nice quiet day today. My boys took my dgs to visit Dad and they played cars on his little over bed table.
My sister has taken some things over to the nursing home. Dad has been allocated a ground floor room with patio doors onto the garden.
She has decided he needs a second chair plus has to take his own TV (Boxing Day deal 32 inch from Mr T) and he wants his radio.
Room needs personalising so she is going to measure the height of the shelves and hopefully we can do a multi frame of photos as dad doesn't want any clutter.
I told her to just ell my boys what needs taking over as easier in the van.

Long chat with the lovely Naebbirac tonight and we are having a coffee and coupon trip tomorrow.
Apgs are stacking up so will print and recycle into an easier denomination plus want to find a little card for Dad to be his first bit of post in his new abode.

Still a day behind so I hope everyone is well.

Strangely enough we couldn't see the future and I *think* that photo was taken in a caravan in a blackpool :D so probably something that lights up :D

    :D

We were looking at pics of DD earlier, I love seeing how much they've changed in such a short amount of time. She found it highly amusing too seeing herself as a baby! Don't think she believed us that she was really that small :rotfl:
