HSBC cancelled some of my priority direct debits

I have a DMP with a debt management charity, and have had this for 2+ years. This week HSBC cancelled several of my priority direct debits. Is this legal? When I went to my local branch I was advised that this had been done by the 3DPM department and that this had happened because I have a DMP. When I went back to my DMP provider, they clearly stated that this action was not initiated by them. Any suggestions as to what I should do next?

    Hello there

A bank may cancel Direct Debits if it has reason to believe the payments can't be honoured. This would usually happen after one or more sets of payments have already been missed, however.

I'm having a bit of difficulty understanding exactly what you say the bank told you. Is the reference to "3DPM" a typo?

Either way there's no way that the DMP charity itself could have cancelled your household DDs, as they have confirmed.

Are you quite sure there have been no instances of bounced payments etc. from your account recently?

The bank may review your credit file every so often and it may reflect the fact that you are in a DMP. However this has been the case for a couple of years so it's hardly news to the bank, and more to the point this doesn't normally result in the cancellation of DDs.

Any further info you can provide would be useful here, OP.

  • Thank you. All direct debits are up to date in the account, and we have not had any missed payments. We use the account only to pay bills. I will be speaking to the bank again today and will keep you updated.
  • All sorted now :)

    Thanks for your help
