Selling old diamond ring

Options
Hi there, I am currently on maternity leave and quickly running out of funds, I am thinking about selling my Grandmothers old ring. It is 18 ct gold and has 3 diamonds totalling to 0.5 ct. The main diamond in the middle has a small mark on it, looks like a slight chip.

I am just wondering if it is worth selling it for scrap gold, but I am worried that I will lose out as I will be giving the diamonds away for free. Are they worth much even though they're slightly damaged? Does anybody know of any reputable buyers of diamonds? Thanks, I'm clueless here lol:eek:

Have a wander round to a few local jewellers that buy 2nd hand items, don't necessarily take the first offer though.

Look for similar items on eBay maybe for a rough idea of its worth, you could always sell yourself on there too.

The mark in the stone may be a chip if it is old and has been worn a lot or it may be an inclusion in the stone, which will affect its value, but it is part of the stone, very few diamonds are flawless and are graded on the size and number of flaws, as well as the colour and of course the carat weight.

  • That's great thank you for your help :) was worried about the mark on it but not so much now, will have a jeweller look at it and then think about putting it on eBay.

Unless you are a very experience ebay seller I think I would personally try and sell it elsewhere- perhaps on of the local jewellers?

Even sending it special delivery will cost you a lot of money, added to which ebay and paypal will take a cut of that postage money as well as your item sale price.

I know you are thinking of selling it.

But have you thought of Pawning it?

That way you get some money and have a choice of getting it back.

    Unless you disliked your Grandmother.:o:)

P.S Do not pawn at something like Cash Converters. Only pawn it at a reputable jewellery shop. That way it will get looked after.

I wouldn't sell it. You won't get much for it and you will regret it later in life.

We have a great independent jewellers in my town that always gives a fair valuation and advice on whether to sell a piece so try and find somewhere like that rather than a chain.

That being said I wear my grandmothers diamond ring daily and will do for the rest of my life until it becomes my grandkids... So I'm in the don't sell camp :o
