  • What's your budget?

I'd stay well away from Apple and iPads etc unless you have more money than sense!

  • You mention game playing, which games? There are two types these days, the first type are apps you download onto your tablet/phone (e.g. Angry Birds) and the second are stored on discs which you load onto a computer (e.g. Call of Duty / World of Warcraft, etc.).

If all you are doing with the device is surfing the net and playing app type games then a tablet is perfect for you. If you need to do more then a laptop is the better route.

Once that decision is made then consider which screen size would suit you (applies to both laptops and tablets) and finally which operating system would suit you best (e.g. laptops - Windows / Linux / Chrome, tablets - IOS, Android) the only way to resolve this is to go and test a few.

You don't need to spend huge amounts of money to get yourself a reasonably capable device in tablet terms that means anything from about £100 & up, laptops will cost a little more from £299 & up.
Don't get sucked into the arms race of processor speed or drive space with the advent of things like Android Drive, Apple Cloud, etc you can store a significant amount of music/photos on the internet and download it when you need to. You may want to consider a used device, many of these are perfectly serviceable, the laptop I'm using is 4 years old and is more than capable of handling anything I throw at it. The used route can save you a lot of money compared with buying new.

Hope you get sorted with something you enjoy.

  • Thanks for the replies.
My budget would be around 200-250.
The games are just the app games. My main use is the internet.
I had been sucked in to looking for a bigger memory.
is there really much difference between a tablet and an ipad to warrent paying so much more?

    Thanks.

Is this device your primary device?
  • Thanks for the reply
It will be my primary device.
I actually don't know what ios is, I guess it's another running system as I've used windows and android.

I've come to a decision and narrowed it down to 2 tablets, the nexus 7 2 or the hudl 2

I've been reviewing both these items and I think the nexus very slightly comes out number 1 favourite but it has been around for longer so maybe more reviews.

    Rigs.

Am writing this on a Nexus 7! Cracking little thing but its due to be upgraded/replaced in the next month or so so hang fire.

There is no reason what so ever to get an Apple anything unless you want to join the lemming I can't think for myself Apple fanboy club.

From a practical point of view Apple cripple their devices SO as just 1 example I can receive a music/film file over bluetooth/WiFi from a friends phone to my Nexus 7 you can't do the same with Apple. Like !!!!!!!!

Well there you go.... Google heard me and has just announced a Nexus 9 to replace the 7. Costs more than 7 thought but not suprisingly less than an iPad and yet again has better specs!

Apple' s new iPad due to be announced tomorrow has been leaked early! ;)
  • If you are familiar with Android the nexus 7 compares very well with anything else on the market currently. The fact that google have announced a replacement means prices for the device are likely to reduce if you can wait.

The new Tesco Hudl is cheaper and might be worth a look, the key thing to check is what suits your needs best. The operating system on both devices will be the same, at least initially. When Google update the current version its likely that nexus devices will receive this sooner than the Tesco product.
