Does anyone know...

Options
what happens if you have finished in your previous job and have another lined up, but it doesn't start for a while (say six weeks gap between jobs)? Presumably not being a job "seeker" you wouldn't be entitled to JSA?

Yes you are entitled to JSA. Up until the day you start the job, it's not guaranteed.

But you do have to show that you are seeking work to do in the meantime and not simply taking a six-week holiday.

[And there are indeed cases to show that the job is not guaranteed. People have turned up on their first day to be met in the car park and to learn that the company has gone into liquidation and there is no job ....]

But how would you do that? Surely the chance of you finding a job that you could do for less than six weeks are fairly minimal?
Would it be sensible to apply for permanent jobs you know you have no intention of staying in (or even taking) just to prove you're seeking work?

Would it maybe be best just to claim housing benefit and forget about JSA?

I am in the same position myself. I was made redundant in April, found a job (after a long struggle - no one wants to know when you are 50+) but had to wait for CRB check to be done.

During this time I was able to claim JSA, as even job agencies would not take me short term.

Now it seems the Council Care Home I am due to start work for is closing.....leaving me in the sh*t again.

Sorry to hear that, I hope you manage to find something else soon.

Out of interest, when you were claiming JSA did you still have to go through the interview procedure/ "pretend" to be looking for work, or did you just tell them you'd found something but couldn't start it yet and they accepted that?

I said I was looking for additional part time work evenings / weekends....so still actually looking for work.....which is true as the job I was waiting to start was only part time.
