Childrens cooking or craft ideas.

Does anybody have craft or cooking ideas to do with the children. I'm artistically challenged but I can cook and I don't mind mess.

the toddlers busy book, by trish kuffner is what you need. It packed full of crafty things and cooking, indoor and outdoor activites, musical instruments to make - most things are made from things lying around the house.

They always have lots to do....be warned, some things are rather messy! ;)
My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being, hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint.

Cbeebies website has some great ideas on

    http://www.hookerycookery.com/kids-menu.htm - caution pop ups

    http://www.teaching-resource.co.uk/teachers/cookery.htm

A friend said Sticky Mittz is great but it seems pricey to me.

Loads of books in libraries both for kids cookery, crafts and rainy day activities.
One day I might be more organised...........

    some really good ideas!

we tried out a particularly messy one today in the garden

    "clean mud"
in large container(we used a plastic storage box), mix 3 bars grated soap and 2 rolls ripped up toilet roll, add hand hot water. and mix with spoon or hands
we added some food colouring as well

    it was cheap to do
3bars value soap from tesco 19p
    4pk value toilet rolls 40p

it makes a gloopy mixture great fun but def outdoor activity, kids both ended up stripping off 6year old was "paddling" in it! next time will just let them wear swimming trunks

just hosed them and garden down when they were finished. have saved as much of mixture as poss in a tub for another day.

Thanks everyone. I like the sound of clean mud. I might do that when we get a dry day. I loved the Crayola site and the links on the teachers site looked good. The toddler busy book I will reserve from the library. I couldn't get anything of the EarthKids site. The pages kept coming up blank.

A couple of recipes from here that my kids love helping with are the Weetabix Brownies and Rocky Road. Both need lots of bashing and mixing, which any small child will enjoy, although there is melted butter and syrup involved, so they can't do everything.

    :)

    Hiya...

How about jam tarts - they're very easy (maybe too quick), I suppose it depends how old the kids are. If you let them mix the pastry, it's take longer.

My mind's gone blank... I got lunch hour haze.

As for craft ideas... home made play dough? Can't remember the recipe off hand, I'll see if I can get it... but need to go back to work soon.

Cards? Easy to do and fun to collect different bits.

I'll see if I can think of some others things for later.

  • Paper plates and elastic... whatever theme you fancy for masks i.e. animals, family members etc.

Party hats (like the cone type which you can make from card instead of buying) wizards for boys, princess for girls. They can add streamers (tissue paper) glitter (if you want to be finding it for weeks!) or sequins.

I also bought some fridge magnet kits and pom pom animals from tesco under £3 each - although I haven't been able to get the kids off the climbing frame since the start of the hols (end of June for us):rotfl: They might end up waiting until the October break at this rate!

If you know someone who has some odds and ends of wool they would like to donate then all you need is to cut some cardboard circles with a largish hole in the middle like a ring doughnut. You need 2 of these per pom pom. Put them both together and wind the wool through the hole to the outer edge keep on wrapping. Then when they get bored or run out of wool... snip round the outer edge. Using a bit of wool tie a knot between the 2 bits of card once secure you can remove the 2 bit of cardboard. There are loads of possiblities with this one...

Are these along the right sort of lines or not their thing?

On days where all it does is drizzle we make - choc and orange muffins, scotch pancakes, strawberry jam (ok all the kids do is hull strawberries - they still enjoy it though!) Raspberry muffins etc...

ok need to go - little people are demanding we plant so flowers... How come they don't demand we do the weeding? :rotfl:
