Being Off Sick - help???

I am a very hard worker and quite often stay on a few hours or do extra days work. More often than not i am rostered to work 6 days out of the 7 anyways and can do about 14 days straight be it of 7 or 12 hours.

I have been with my company for about 3 years now and have probably been sick for a few days each year. I hate being sick because i worry about work being short staffed because i know plenty of people take the p*ss, and on occasion i have tried to phone in sick and they have talked me into come in anyways.

I am on new medication Metformin, which makes me feel sick/ be sick and i was of on Thursday but then forced myself in for Friday because i felt guilty which now thinking about it i should not have done. Then i was ill again friday night and so have been off since saturday.

Procedure is to phone in sick and then not again until the day before you are coming back by 12 noon, but i phoned in today anyways just so i could give them heads up and predicted that i would be in say wednesday and just confriming that if it was wednesday i would need to phone up on Tuesday before noon to confirm......

The supervisor whom i spoke to knows that prior to me having anytime off that i felt very unwell wednesday ie felt sick, headaches, shakes and that i really dont like having time off!!! he then came out with a comment that i took great offence too sarccy voice " i dont see how you would know now that you wont be in till wednesday" or something along those lines.

ok in hind sight i perhaps should have said a few days but i just thought i was helping him out to pin point it a bit more..... and now i feel like im being accused of lying, despite being a VERY honest person and that makes me think why do i bother.

I can maybe understand him thinking that but believe it NEVER should have been said.... and that my good character should have been taken into consideration.

What do you think????

Yes you're right. You have called in to give ample notice of your absence, thus making resourcing easier for the managers. The supervisor should not have said what he did. Give him the benefit of the doubt - maybe he has loads of people calling in sick and was taking it out on you. Doesn't make it right.

Don't let it bother you. Concentrate on getting well, go back to work on Wednesday or whenever, and if your company does do back to work interviews, mention it lightly then that you didn't appreciate the comment, as you are not a malingerer and work hard for the company.

thanks hun - my bf thinks maybe im over reacting but i am quite upset about the comment but im not normally one to the rock the boat, i just think on this occasion i should maybe mention it before they continue.

Can i assume that the Metformin is because your're a type2 diabetic?

well not diabetic exactly i have PCOS which has diabetes related problems.

I can see why he acted a bit strange when you have noted a specific day your coming back.

Maybe his point of view, is that in the past, when people says specific days he smells a rat and thinks that they are actually Skiving. Like people taking Sick to fly abroad and know exactly what day theyre coming back. iknow ppl who have done it.

Obviously you are not and are on medication with Side Effects. I think he is just hanging on what you have said, rather than what is wrong.

Dont dwell on what he has said, just goes to show, you try to do the right thing and keep your conscience at bay by being honest with them, so they could arrange cover ahead of time and it blows up in your face,even though you were the one with the good intentions.


Personally I never take Sick, maybe I am lucky though. I always put it as Annual Leave, as new jobs always ask how much sick u have had in the last 3days, with hoping to get out i try 2keep my record as clean as poss.

How long have you been taking Metformin, after a few months you should be accustomed to unwanted effects, ask your GP to try alternative medication.

i have only been on them for about 4 weeks if that so i need to hold out for another 2
