Toothache after dental work

I visited my dentist just over 3 weeks ago and had 2 fillings. Once of which was very deep. The days following I had an achey jaw and the week after I started getting quite bad toothache. I decided to sit it out over the weekend and if it was no better go back to my dentist. It seemed to clear up so i put it down to starting to eat on that side where my fillings are and that it was just settling down. Yesterday I have started with toothache again and woke up with it in the early hours. Should it take this long to settle down? I'm going to ring the dentist tomorrow but not sure when they'll be able to fit me in as they're going on holiday shortly so are busy busy.

I had a filling the same as you, actually I wasn't having any problem with this tooth but the dentist said I needed it sooooo. Anyway I had it filled and that started the problems I was then wracked (sp??) with pain - had it refilled but to no avail it was still giving me major jip. I eventually had a root canal filling and I still had one very sensitive tooth, my next move apart from bancrupcy was to have the bloomin' thing out but it has actually settled right down getting better as the weeks go by, it's still not 100% but loads better.

I wasn't having any problems with it either til they blooming well filled it! I am petrified of the dentist so I have been hoping it will settle but it's looking like another trip and another dent from my bank account :(

I can still taste a metally taste too so I'm wondering if the filling isn't right or I've managed to crack it although I didn't eat on it for a week. This has certainly taught me a lesson. I put the dentist off for 3 years as I'm a scardey cat :(

    This can sometimes happen.

Completely symptomless teeth with problems, that start hurting only when they're treated.

Had it not been treated, it would have flared up one day - and probably one day soon.

    Get back ASAP.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I've rung my dentist this morning and she's on her holidays for 2 weeks ARGH!! They have a locum for emergencies only but I've been advised to take it day by day and have made an appointment for 8 August, if I can last that long :( I'm lucky I guess it's not a severe pain more like a constant nagging ache. Ah well, paracetamol with breakfast for me.

Yes my Dentist said that. She said she'd hoped she'd got it in time too.

Is the metally taste normal? I had a look on the web and started to get a bit freaked out with the tales of mercury poisioning.... (doesn't take much for me to get freaked out though so stopped reading!)

The metallic taste is normal for a new filling.

Fresh metal will react slightly with the other metal in your mouth giving this taste. After a few days the filling forms an oxide layer over the top which isn't as conductive, and the taste stops.

Don't worry about the scares you see on the internet.

These sites fail to point out that you ingest more mercury, and in a more toxic form, from a portion of fish than you ever do from a mouthfull of fillings.

I had the same problem, the pain lasted for over a month I went back twice but he could see no problems , suddenly the pain eased and then vanished although I do find in cold weather, ice cream or hot drinks all effect my teeth so must be sensitive even though i use the sensitive tooth paste etc. Teeth are a problem coming whilst we have them and even having them out but my how the dentist has changed when i recall the school dentist the best ones i came across were the australians doing a short spell in our surgery.
