I was wondering if anyone here could give me some advice on the situation i am in.
Up until a month ago i was working at Tesco's full-time in a low level job which, although the basic rate was very low, i managed to make enough to get by on by working six days a week and doing lots of additional overtime. I recently started at a new job within accounts, however i have carried on working at Tesco's on Sundays because the extra money come's in very handy (At £13 an hour i think i'd be silly to give it up!). The problem is that i am unsure what to do about the tax situation. I am aware that i must be taxed at 22% for the money i earn at Tesco's, but i am unsure how make this happen. I am also reluctant to let my new employer know about my second job as i don't think they would be too happy about the situation. I have asked Tesco's to send me my P45 so that i can give it to my new employer and i was planning to sort out any additional tax i have to pay through Tesco's so my new employer doesn't have to deal with it. Tesco's seem very reluctant to do this as they say they cannot give me my P45 as i am still employed by them, at the same time my new employer keeps asking why it is taking me so long for me to recieve my P45. In addition in my last paypacket from Tesco's i recieved a tax refund which clearly isn't correct so how would i go about paying this back?
In conclusion i'm asking how i am supposed to get my P45 to my new employer and also how i sort the tax situation out with Tesco.
Any help will be greatly appreiciated as i am getting properly confused by the whole situation.

Tell your new employer that you cannot get hold of your P45 and complete a P46 - tick statement B (This is my only or main job)
Also complete a P46 for Tesco - tick box C (I have another job)
What this will do is put your tax code at job 1 @ 522L M1 and BR M1 at Tesco.
Both P46's will be sent to HMRC who will inform your respective employers of the correct codes (probably as above without the M1)
If either of your employers cant provide you with a P46 you can find one Here

Agree with tigtag. Also, do your terms and conditions of your new employment explicitly say you must not have another job? or that you must not have another job without the permission of your employer? If either of those is true, then you do risk problems if the new employer finds out (and I don't know about you, but we're often chatting about what we've been doing over the weekend.)
If you're unsure about that, you could try asking an "I was wondering ..." question. "I was wondering if this company had any policy on taking a second weekend job?"
Some companies will want to know - actually let's say 'most' companies will want to know - because there could be a conflict of interest. It's critical in some lines of work, eg driving, obviously.
And I don't know if there'd be anything useful on the ACAS website, eg about what a 'reasonable' employer might feel about having more than one job.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hi there
1st thing - stop worrying!!
If u do not have a P45 to give to ur new/main employer, then they should issue u with a P46.
Basically this notifies the Inland Revenue about ur new job & any other jobs u may have. They will ajust ur tax code accordingly.
P46's also apply to people who have lost there last P45 & may be paying emergency tax or basic rate tax etc.
Hope this helps.
PS keep all payslips & P60 (issued around April time), chances are ur tax code will of bn mis-calculated, in the 1st year & u may get a tax refund!!! :T0
