If they are prepared to send say a card to my door with a 5k limit with zero proof of income then why should they get to see my bank statement (which I would not have provided for anything except possibly a mortgage) if I find myself struggling to pay?
Because at that point you are asking them to help you out, and they can choose to do so only if you give them certain information.
Refusing to do so is rather cutting off your nose to spite your face.
You are, in effect, saying to them "I'm in trouble, please help", and they are saying "OK, let's just have a quick check to make sure that you really are struggling". If you want to be awkward, you can be, but then don't be surprised if they dont accept your request.0
