New to Debt?!

Hi everyone...
Total newbie here...not a place I'd thought I'd be but it seems informative and pleasant all the same...

Decided to separate from my husband this week...also came across an empty savings account and loads of debts
I haven't a clue what to do...untill I came across this forum and knew I had to post...

So anyway I found

My debts
Vanquis £888.99 - I thought was cleared
Natwest £150.00 - I thought was cleared
Hailfax £245.64 joint account - he's primary account holder
Lloyds £657.60 joint account - I'm primary account holder

Household debts
Council tax £1.636 outstanding in joint name
Gas and electric £2.942.64 outstanding in his name

Now I haven't found any more apart from his dmp arrangement and I'm still finding it hard to get my head round it..
Got an appointment with cab in morning see what they suggest..
Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks
Xx

First of all you need to find out if he is going to help you pay off these debts? if not then you need to go solo and concentrate on clearing the ones in your name and any joint ones, however with the biggest being in his name, a little "you help me pay mines i'll pay towards yours" wouldn't go a miss.

    Hope this helps.

Just wanted to stop by and say hello and I feel for you - it must of come as such a shock to find the debt. I think you are doing the right thing going to the CAB - I guess you need to know if he is going to take some responsibility for it or not!

Anyway not sure what real advice to give - just wanted to wish you well

The council tax debt needs your most urgent attention.

On top of everything else, you do not need Bailiff's turning up at your door.

You need to contact the Gas/electric company, and explain what has happened, even though the debt is in his name, it may not stop them cutting you off.

To be honest, everything else can wait, as its non priority debt.

Citizens advice is a good place to start, they should put you on the right road here.

They basically said my debts could wait untill I'd sorted out the housing situation...
Because if I stayed here I'd have to make sure I had enough money to live on and perhaps clear debts too but they couldn't work on how to clear my debts untill I had income..
He's still being an !!!! about leaving
My brain is mush..starting to feel really depressed..
Found out he'd lied about storing the leaving money pot so I know he's not got nothing now If i kick him out...even then he can declare home rights especially as we're married n have children...
I'm so confused...its been an awful week..
Got a benefits check up on the 28th to see how much I can get on a single claim
Arranged a payment plan for time being with council tax and they seem ok with accepting that....
Not even sure he'll pay any bills this month
I need to contact my creditors again see if I can make token payments...sigh

Sounds like a very unpleasant situation, but well done for coming on here and starting to make headway! The council tax one is important so well done on getting that up and running. Mostly just wanted to say things may seem awful now and its understandable that you wouldn't be feeling very good, make sure you look after yourself!

    Good luck, Jodles:o
