MSE News: HMRC admits calculations may be wrong for some who over or underpaid tax

    Check the figures they've based their calculations on are correct. If they are, congratulations on your interest-free loan, now pay the tax.

    I've read that if the reason you underpaid tax was an employer error then they are the ones liable for that tax - I am 99% sure that my employer screwed something up when I joined as I received an emergency tax code representing a double job (when I only ever was employed by one company).

    I'll give them a call and press them on that and see what happens.

    Not quite as simple as that, some details here

    To understand what has happened you will need to give more details. The emergency tax code may well sometimes result in under-taxing but is issued as a result of the information given by the employee and would not be classed as an error by the employer; but perhaps something else happened to cause the error, only with full details can this be understood.

    Also might be better to start a new post for this.

    Fairly normal to be given an emergency tax code when you join a new employer. What happens at the change over in jobs will determine the correct tax code.

    Some more detail needed;

    1. Did you change jobs in 2013/14?
    2. What tax code was used? Did you stay on this tax code or was it changed?
    3. Did you hand in a P45 and if so what were the details from it regarding tax code, taxable pay, tax paid and week/month of leaving.
    4. If no P45 did you complete a P46 or New Starter checklist? If you did what box did you tick?
  • Spoke to HMRC - Employer made a mistake not providing a P11D containing benefits in kind details. It's been forwarded to an investigative department of HMRC who will look at the case and make a decision in 30 days - May indeed be written off. Ah well, see what happens.
