I've been sent a court summons for a debt. I don't even know its origin, my thought it that its been passed from one company to another but its definitely one that has passed the 6 year point with regard to any contact with them. Is there anything I can do to stop this from going to court?

If you have the court claim (from Northampton Court?) then it is already in the court process and you must respond within the timescales or you will get a ccj ordering you to pay this immediately - a judgement in default.
It's easier if their particulars of claim identify the debt. What exactly does it say? Omit the specifics like dates, reference numbers and balances.
If it's statute barred then you can pick the relevant phrase from the standard letter in this thread:
