Thank you - some of you have been quite helpful and, I'm afraid, some of you quite smug. Were you not very young once, and a little bit rash?

Young, yes. Rash? Well, I moved away frm home at 18, and never went back to live again, struggled through a degree on £2k per year (90s), and then spent a few years living in penury while getting the qualifications I needed for a good job, so maybe yes, that was rash compared to staying at home and getting a sensible job there.

On the other hand, I never spent more than I earned. This left me hungry quite often, cold sometimes, and with no entertainment or transport for long periods, but that is what used to be normal if you did not earn much money.

It's not "smug" to suggest to others that they may be happier in the long-run if they try to do the same.

It'd be nice if you could report back in a few months, and let us know if they have bucked the trend and not just run up more debt on frivolous spending in the interim.

    Nannoo,

This loans forum isn't noted for huggie cuddly advice, the blunt and brutal advice often given here is intended to help people who want to solve the superficial issue they have, and who simply do not see the underlying problem they need to address.

It comes down to one blunt truth: you cannot keep on spending money you do not have.

I hope you're successful instilling that message into your Nephew and G/F's outlook on life.
Optimists see a glass half full :)
Pessimists see a glass half empty :(
Engineers just see a glass twice the size it needed to be :D
