Orange Pomanders - do u need orris?

Hi - have made these years ago with kids, did not use orris and they all went mouldy.
Niece mentioned them again last year so was thinking of trying again this year.
Is it best to buy orris root powder as a preservative? Have found it on ebay for around £4.
Anyone got any good recipes - apart from just covering in cloves and rolling in spices.

I make them and have never used anything. I think it depends where you keep them. Mine are usually hung somewhere quite dry so just dry out instead of going mouldy.0

What about dipping them in disinfectant? I heard it makes carved pumpkins last longer so maybe it would work on them too?0
