Cyprus debt

Hello,
I purchased a apartment in Cyprus which was subsequently flooded. The insurance company (owned by the bank) refused to pay out rendering the flat useless. I was forced to abandon the mortgage.
I am now being chased by a UK debt collector for community fees by a company who were not involved in the complex at the time that I purchased my apartment.
I was wondering if there were legal grounds for this company to threaten me with a CCJ? Any help would be brilliant.

WARNING: I wouldn't call myself an expert in any way, shape or form so please take what I say with a pinch of salt.
Was the mortgage with a UK bank or one in Cyprus? If the latter from my research the debt stays in that country and there is no legal way to chase it across borders.
But this is only based on my research of obtaining credit overseas. I have a default on my file in the UK but may move to the EU for work and was looking at my chances of getting a CC. My research concluded that each country is governed by it's own laws.....0 -
