When to ask for, and expect, payrises?

So I started a job in August. Great job, great role, with surely good progression I would hope. I am currently named a Junior for my role. So I would expect that I would expect a pay rise when the company feel I am no longer a Junior in my role.
Bear in mind I have a specific role which no one else does, so I can assume that they want me to become a non junior once I can handle all the responsibility for my role.
I live in London, as you will know living costs are expensive, mostly rent prices are just very high and can make your income feel like minimum wage after rent and bills are taken from it.
So I cant help but try and plan for a near future where I am earning enough to make noticeable savings for my future and still live comfortably.
When do you realistically expect pay increases, and pay rises, and promotions?
I am talking from a graduate in first after-uni role, I'd love to hear from anyone who has had similar experience in this situation, how did your career progression within your job go?

When do you realistically expect pay increases, and pay rises, and promotions?
Quite simply when there is a reason or one. If I was taking on extra responsibility I might reasonably expect a pay increase when attending my annual review. I'd certainly expect one when receiving a promotion.
If I were your employer and you said you thought you should get a pay rise my first question would be "Why?"
In your case I'd probably focus on not being a junior anymore. Work out what you need to do in order to move up the ladder and do it. If you wish to ask your manager what you need to do to no longer be a junior member of staff do so.0 -
I think the time to ask about promotions and pay increases is when you are having your performance review particularly if you are getting exceeds expectations or high achiever type reviews. If you are getting an average review then that's the time to ask what you need to work on to get you to the next level and get you a promotion or pay increase.Starting Mortgage Balance: £264,800 (8th Aug 2014)

When you become more valuable to the company and begin delivering said value.
No reason to 'expect' a wage increase just due to you turning up to do your job.0 -
I would expect an annual cost of living rise in line with RPI and further rises to reflect experience/performance annually. Whether you will get this is another matter. However if you don't ask you won't get anything.0

Thank you everyone for their advice. Solid stuff.

Is a good spot of advice. Once/if I pass probationary period, then I will likely do this and ask if there's a set route I should take to achieve no longer being a junior in my position. :T0 -
