my niece owes £500 to halifax when she was a student in 1999
she completely forgot and now an agency has made contact and is demanding over£1000
Is there somethng about a 6 year ruling on a debt..after that time the debt is written off
would be grateful for some advice

Hi Freedom
Sorry I don't have any advice for you but I am sure someone will be along shortly who will know.

Hi freedom - it is more than likely, provided that your daughter has made no written contact with the original creditor, nor made any payment towards the debt, in the last six years, that this debt is covered by the Limitations Act and is 'Statute Barred'.
This means, basically, that, once you tell the DCA that you will not be paying the debt - they will be unable to continue with attempts to collect it.
There is a template letter, on the National Debtline website - I will post the link later - which you should send to the DCA.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
