Hi people.
Ok so basically I'm after some advise.
My partner and myself were looking to apply for a mortgage so we decided to check our credit reports and also try and think of anything we may owe to anyone.
my partners ex was terrible with money and opened numerous accounts in her name and she was sure that he opened an account with orange in her name so we decided to call to see if there was any debt.
On the first occasion she called orange we were told that all accounts under every previous address of my partner had been settled so we asked for a letter to that affect which we did not receive.
The next occasion we spoke to an extremely rude man who hung up on her and when called back he said "the line broke" so we spoke to his manager who then also confirmed there was no debt, we requested a letter which we still haven't recieved.
We tried numerous times to contact them after this but gave up in the end, however a few weeks ago we received a letter in the post saying our file has been sold to a debt collection agency and we owe 1200!!
I would just like to know where I stand on this issue? They can't just tell me I have no debt and then suddenly send a letter saying we owe 1200. Does this break any law by them falsely telling me they are settled.
Cheers james

Does the letter give any indication, as to when the account was allegedly opened, and/or when the last payment was allegedly made?0
