You can't do anything that needs Adobe Flash (lots of streaming websites) as that doesn't exist on PS3.
You can buy something called PlayTV which is a Freeview tuner that you add on to your PS3 - plug an aerial in, and you PS3 becomes a PVR.0 -

No. PS3 still beats PS4 for media playback.

Perhaps. But based on previous "improvements", no.
The PS3 had PS2 backwards compatibility, Linux support, SACD support, and a multi-card reader when it launched in 2006 (and before launch it had two network ports and even more USB ports!). Some features were simply stripped out when Sony released a new PS3 model (the one out today is the third model). Some features were removed via software updates that you could not refuse if you wanted to continue to take your PS3 online. However, Sony has built a vast and sticky web of DRM restrictions that will kick in to make life miserable for anyone who declines the "upgrade":
It will be impossible to play PS3 games online.
It will be impossible to play new PS3 games.
It will be impossible to watch new Blu-ray videos.
New Blu-ray discs could even disable the Blu-ray drive entirely if they contain an AACS Host Revocation List that affects the old firmware version.
Videos on DTCP-IP media servers will be disabled.
If I had to buy a console to use as a media centre, it would be the PS3. Let's just hope they've finished removing features from it!
