my sister has downs syndrome. she absolutely loves drawing & has countless books, pencils etc i thought it would be lovely to get her a tablet with hopefully a stylus for xmas. however i am not sure if there are any or which one. its also important that it can be used without the internet as my elderly parents don't have it...nor plan on getting it. i could download games etc for her but she must be able to use the tablet without internet. any ideas?

Try the nabi 2 pad. I don't mean this in a horrible way, but it's aimed at children and although it has full functionality of a 'grown up' tablet, you can restrict functionality and it has big buttons to make it easy to use

We got our daughter one refurbished on ebay from argos. It looked and was packaged like brand new

Thanks Carl, that's great, no probs, my sister although adult in most ways, is very child like in others, so she would benefit from something like this, plus the big buttons are a defo advantage! Really appreciate your help :)

You can use a "capacitive" stylus for normal tablets (and smartphones), which basically emulates a finger. You can get some nice-enough styluses that double as ballpoint pens for about a pound. They'll be less fingerprinty than a finger, but they won't have the same fine control, and can sometimes be a bit hit-and-miss. There will also be no pressure sensitivity.

Some tablets have "active digitisers" in the screen, meaning they are designed to register inputs from special styluses, and have great resolution and pressure sensitivity. Professional digital artists sometimes use these. The cheapest "good" tablet like this would probably be the Samsung Note 8, an 8" tablet with a stylus that slides into its own space in the tablet. There are larger Note tablets, as well as smaller Note phones, which all have this pressure-sensitive stylus. But I wouldn't describe any of them as "cheap".

Carl31's nabi 2 suggestion seems more cost-effective. Perhaps pair it with a cheap capacitive stylus pen so that your sister can choose whether she prefers that, or her finger. :)

As a Christmas present suggestion: you can get (cheap!) gloves where the ends of the index and middle fingers are capacitive, so you can use your phone/tablet in cold weather without taking off your gloves! ;)
