How long should I wait before getting a loan to pay for a house extension?

No idea. But I would imagine taking out a loan, increasing your mortgage and using up your savings having just returned to work after having a baby won't be the best decision you've ever made.

Do you own your home outright? You could try and apply for an unsecured personal loan, and if you don't get accepted you could always go for a secured loan on your home (or if you have a mortgage, extend your mortgage).

It's almost certainly harder these days to add to your mortgage than it is to get a loan.
