Done it! (I think)

Well, on Friday I wandered in to my local Nationwide branch with a wad of notes in my hand and proudly, smugly, happily handed over my mortgate number and declared that I wanted to pay off the small balance (£286).
"Sorry sir", said the lady behind the counter, "we can't accept a balance settlement here. You have to contact the Mortgage Dept to establish the exact amount"
Not to be outdone I asked if I could make a payment to the account. When she replied in the affirmative I handed over £300.
So, I THINK I am mortgage free and they owe me £14!!
Bit of an anti-climax really. I had the champagne on ice too.
