"North West based Vertex - ranked UK's 2nd largest outsourcer - sold by United Utilities

15th January 2007 saw United Utilities PLC reach an agreement on the sale of Vertex, its business process outsourcing subsidiary, to a consortium of US-based private equity firms led by Oak Hill Capital Partners and also including GenNx360 and Knox Lawrence International. Completion of the sale is expected by the end of March 2007.
Meanwhile, Vertex has moved up to second position of the UK Business Process Outsourcer (BPO) player rankings according to Ovum, a leading provider of research, advisory and consulting services in the global Information, Communication and Technology sector.
Vertex are major employers in the North West, with 1,500 staff in its Bolton contact centre and central Manchester IT and data centre, and a further 2,000 staff across the region.
With a turnover of £405 million in 2005/2006 and a sale value of £217.5 million, Vertex has grown from third largest UK BPO to second position in the space of a year, after acquiring financial services company Marlborough Stirling in 2005.
The company has an impressive range of blue-chip clients as well as some of the UK's largest local authority and central government clients. Recently, Vertex has secured several contracts including an agreement with the CSA, and a five-year deal with db Mortgages.
Commenting on the sale by United Utilities and the company's leading position in the UK BPO ranking, Vertex Managing Director TOM DRURY said: "The sale to a group of investors led by Oak Hill Capital represents the natural evolution in the development of our business and will ensure that Vertex has the backing it needs to continue to develop successfully.
"Meanwhile I am delighted that Vertex has been recognised as one of the UK's top BPO providers. We are proud of our achievements and of the reputation that we have established for caring passionately about our customers and employees."
Top of the UK BPO list are Capita, who also have a major presence within the North West. Employing over 5,000 staff, grossing a regional turnover in excess of £200 million per annum and operating over 100 business locations throughout the region, Capita states that the North West is not only one of their biggest locations, but also one of their fastest growing.
