in Cutting tax
Hi
noticed my code 999l this year and been slightly different for last 5 years. One year I used my car at work for a course and claimed petrol back and someone said this is why. I havent used my car for anything similar for 3 years. How do I notify tax? Does it really make that nuch of a difference?
Thanks

That really does sound like an emergency code!
The standard code this year is 1000L, so if you don't have any allowable expenses or taxable benefits to be included for the year then your tax code is wrong by £10, meaning that you would pay £2 or £4 too much tax for the year, so probably not worth worrying about, but you could phone HMRC if you wanted to get it changed.
I'm assuming you don't have taxable income of over £100K. If you did then the personal allowance is then phased out, so you would need that changed to minimise any underpayment for the year.'I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my father. Not screaming and terrified like his passengers.' (Bob Monkhouse).
Sky? Believe in better.
Note: win, draw or lose (not 'loose' - opposite of tight!)0 -
I suggest you ring them (its best before 9am) and ask why you have that code, then ask for it to be corrected and also for a refund of your overpayment for the previous 4 tax years. 4 years is as far back as they go. Have you never had a P2 form which explains why your tax code is not the standard one?0

ThanksStephen Covey once said that "when you teach once, you learn twice". That is the primary reason for my participation on the forums as an IFA.
Although I strive to provide accurate information in my posts, there may be the odd time when I fail. Yes I know it's hard to believe but even Your Hero can make mistakes. Apologies in advance.0 -
Thanks everyone, maybe worth getting it changed. I was told by previous bursar at school it was because I had used my car and claimed mileage0
