Im still new to this but my thinking was to have as much demand during the day when everyone is feeding into the grid with solar and reduce demand at night when its dark and no one is generating.
    Hi

I think that the issue which tunnel is trying to convey to jack_pott is that UK grid peak demand times don't match up with peak (or even decent) pv generating times.

Looking at .... http://gridwatch.templar.co.uk/ .... it's plain to see that any domestic demand which can be shifted from the evening grid peak to pv self generation will help smooth the overall demand profile .... jack_pott is correct to mention that one of the goals of pv export is to help reduce carbon based generation during the day, but the equally (or even more important) point of changing the demand profile to displace the reactive generation provided by gas fuelled plant seems to have been missed, which is simply the thrust of tunnel's posts ....

  • As opposed to offering an answer to "is it safe to turn them off" my question would be, why do you have three of them in the first place?

    Hi

Possibly an allotment and freezing own produce ?? ... and/or ... buying meat in bulk based on 1/4 - 1/2 or whole beasts at a time and freezing ??

... I know plenty of people who do both and usually have a number of freezers ...

I seem to use about 1Kw of electric between 11pm and 7am which im guessing is the fridge and freezer (3 of them)
Instead of guessing buy a plug in monitor and find out what is using the electricity.
